Published:February 28, 2023DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jopan.2023.01.017

Achieving quality health outcomes through the implementation of a spontaneous awakening and Spontaneous Breathing Trial protocol.
Spontaneous Awakening Trials (SATs) and Spontaneous Breathing Trials (SBTs) are evidence-based assessments that when implemented in the care of patients who are mechanically ventilated improves outcomes.

Factors associated with Spontaneous Awakening Trial and Spontaneous Breathing Trial performance in adults with critical illness: analysis of a multicenter, nationwide, cohort study.
SATs and SBTs are considered standard of care in most hospitals and when implemented together can shorten the duration of MV, decrease the intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS), and reduce mortality risk.
