PATIENTS AND FAMILIES place themselves in the hands of nurses every day. Expectations of nurses are multidimensional and frequently complex, but the paramount expectation is that nurses will care for and keep a loved one safe. The nursing profession consistently earns an extraordinary vote of confidence from the public through annual Gallup poll results. Nursing receives the top ranking for ‘the most honest and ethical profession,’ and has achieved this status for seven of the past eight years.

The trust people place in us is humbling, but also inspiring. I would add to that quality of trust the quality of advocacy. The power one person can have and the impact of patient advocacy are valuable and meaningful.
