The Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing seeks original articles useful to nurses responsible for all phases of perianesthesia care in surgery facilities, PACUs, and critical care units. Readers are experienced clinicians practicing in diverse areas.

First-time authors as well as those who have published previously are encouraged to submit manuscripts. The Coeditors welcome manuscripts describing a specific clinical innovation, original research, or case study experiences.

The Coeditors invite authors to send a query letter before beginning to write a manuscript. Briefly describe your idea and the primary topics to be covered. A Coeditor will respond with feedback to help you develop the manuscript in accordance with the Journal's current needs and policies.

Preparing the manuscript

The Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nursing subscribes in general to the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication, from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (External link http://www.icmje.org/urm_full.pdf) and the AMA Manual of Style, 10th Edition (External link http://www.amamanualofstyle.com/oso/public/index.html).

Allow margins of at least 1.5 inches. Use headings and subheadings to separate major sections and ideas within the paper. Describe nursing actions and focus on how to perform. Include the unique contribution of your ideas and experience with the literature review and research presented. Avoid unusual abbreviations. Abstracts are limited to 150 words. Include the following headings for research papers: Purpose, Design, Methods, Finding, Conclusions.

Add three to four keywords to your article. Keywords are essential for the accessibility and retrievability of your article. Each keyword (which can be a phrase of more than one word) should describe one single concept. Words such as "and" or "of" should be avoided.

Citing references within the text

The text must be accurate. Document content within the text using superscript numbers to designate the references:
As the Doe1 findings indicate...

If several consecutive references apply, separate first and last number using a hyphen:
As Doe and others2-8 found...

Separate multiple references using commas when they are not consecutive:
Several studies3,8,9,12 show that...

If a previously published idea is briefly paraphrased, indicate the source by placing the reference number at the end of the appropriate sentence:
One innovative approach to the clinical problem is to institute screening procedures for X, Y, and Z.13

References

References should be compiled on a separate page at the end of the article according to the order of citation in the text, not alphabetically. References should be from the last 5 years. Abbreviations for titles of medical periodicals should conform to those used in MEDLINE. Give inclusive page numbers.
